Each species is designed for a certain type of diet by nature. Dogs and cats, like their wild ancestors, are designed for a prey model diet consisting of herbivores. Therefore their dietary system is programmed to digest animal proteins and fats. You do not need a special feeding schedules to provide your pet with a balanced raw diet.

barfen ist gesunde ernährungA full spectrum of minerals must be supplied in your pet's diet in correct balance and sufficient amounts if he is going to remain healthy into advanced old age. Bones are the storehouse of almost all the minerals your pet requires in perfect balance for optimal absorption. In addition, excellent levels of minerals are found in the other components of the BARF DIET.

The BARF DIET does not contain grain products. Grains are not biologically appropriate for our pets. The ingestion of grain and other starchy foods contribute to most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases. Domestic pets should be getting their carbohydrate in a similar manner to their wild ancestors. Natural Fresh fruits and vegetables, in the BARF DIET, provide a natural source of carbohydrates in a more digestible format. Current trends of improving the diets, exercise, health and well being of humans have influenced the way we have improved the feeding regimen for our prized pets.

The results of a healthy, biologically appropriate and fresh diet will soon be mirrored in your pet’s vitality, its overall health and regained appetite.

Especially with sick or older pets that have low immune system, results can be seen quickly. In many cases, existing allergies or fur problems simply disappear after a short feeding period.

How do I portion small amounts of food?

Frozen food, slightly defrosted in the freezer, can be portioned in slices which can then be frozen again. Hint: tiny amounts (toy breeds/cats) can be frozen in ice cube trays (slightly oiled before filling them).

Never re-freeze meat which was defrosted at room temperature. Only re-freeze meat which was always kept in a frozen or very cold state.

Why are my dog‘s droppings white and crumbly?

These are so-called „bone droppings“, a result of feeding to many bones or feeding bones the wrong way. Bones are heavy to digest and should not be feed to pets at the beginning of/when switching to a raw diet. Read more about feeding bones here: Knochenfütterungs-Tipps (PDF)

My dog does not eat/does not tolerate liver. Can I just stop feeding liver?

No, you can not because liver is one of the main (= essential) foods. Feeding liver can lead to loose stools or diarrhea therefore you should only feed small amounts at a time. Adjust the amount of liver to your dog‘s digestion as every dog reacts differently.
Try feeding slightly fried liver at the beginning. You can also feed liver from other animals such as chicken liver.
A good alternative for liver is cod liver oil.

Can I feed my cats a raw diet?

Yes, in fact it is the best you can do as cats are carnivores. To switch a cat to a raw diet sometimes needs a lot of patience and some tricks. Ask us, we will be pleased to help you.
Our Swiss Poultry Balance rolls (125g) are a great source for an easy and balanced raw diet.

Do I have to feed special supplements to my dog‘s/cat‘s raw diet?

If you feed a balanced and varied raw diet, you do not need any supplements that are on the market for a BARF diet. If you feed them, you may risk an oversupply of nutrients.
Supplements are useful if they are needed (e.g. if you want to support your pet‘s joints).

I recommend to add high quality Omega-3-oil when feeding a raw diet (e.g. extra virgin coconut oil, high quality fish oil etc.)

What does the meat for buon viando come from?

We only sell Swiss meat.
Our product labels give detailled information about the canton the meat comes from and the type of farming.

What is the difference between beef rumen and omasum?

A cow has 4 different types of stomachs: rumen, reticulum, omasum and abomasum. Rumen and omasum are the best nutritional sources for our pets. Both contain lots of enzymes and bacteria which support the intestinal flora of your dog.
At the beginning you should only feed small amounts because high amounts may lead to diarrhea.
We recommend to switch between rumen and omasum (about 2-3 times a week).
Feeding too much rumen/omasum (on a daily basis) for a longer period may result in organic disfunctions!

My dog does not like fish, is this a problem?

Dogs on a raw diet often do not get enough iodine. In order to guarantee enough iodine in the diet, you should feed fish once a week. Dogs that do not take fish should be feed seaweeds instead.

Hint: when starting to feed fish, just feed tiny amounts and mix well with the usual food.
